Pump Up Your Book Virtual Book Tour: Sifting Through Mud by Demetria Foster Gray; Review & #Giveaway

Title: Sifting Through Mud
Author: Demetria Foster Gray
Publisher: Amazon Digital Services
Pages: 276
Genre: Contemporary Women's Fiction
Format: Paperback/Kindle
The death of Nyla's husband comes as a shock to everyone except Nyla. What’s shocking to Nyla is her inability to grieve his death like a typical loving wife should grieve. But Nyla isn't a typical loving wife. She's a woman in desperate need to breathe. The oxygen in her life has long gone, and the astonishing thing she feels from her husband's death is relief, not grief.
Even more astonishing is the rare and unexpected friendship which develops between Nyla and her dead husband's mistress. However, Nyla isn’t aware her new best friend is a former mistress. And as their friendship deepens into an unshakable bond, Nyla is forced to face secrets her husband took with him to his grave. This means she has to sift through mud to unravel the truth. A truth that’s better off dead.
Yet through it all, the one thing which makes Nyla violently breathless, is the exact same thing that causes her to finally breathe.

My Thoughts:

Nyla Kane is a woman who’s not happy with her life right now.  Vivian Phillips is also a woman who’s not happy right now.  Their lives collide and it’s an interesting beginning.  These are two women who don’t realize how much they have in common when they first meet.

Our author has Nyla seeing a professional and the way that the scenes are written, either the author has personal experience as a reference or she has done a lot of observing and research to get the scene so it appears accurate.  The scenes will have you feeling as if you’re eavesdropping on those visits.

The author has included a scene-stealer and her name is Miss Parks.  I couldn’t help it but she had me laughing.  She’s the next-door neighbor who thinks she knows everyone’s business.  This book shows how a friendship grows from nothing and not all are forged from childhood.  But there’s jealousy that can also rear its ugly head.  This is a book that you can let life interfere – which is ok since that’s what this book is about.

It has a lot of things in it that make it a great book club read – it has plenty of things to discuss.  If you’re not sure whether to get an e-copy or paperback, I vote for the paperback.  It’s a book that you could take a lot of places where you don’t have to worry about needing a place to plug in.  For me the saddest two words I had to read was “The End”.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching this friendship blossom and I’m sure you will feel the same.

  1. Lynn, I'm so deeply touched and humbled by your review. You've given great detail of the story and seem to really know the characters (especially the mention of Miss Park). I'm very thankful your review is not a generalization of the book, which sometimes means the reviewer didn't really read it. Your thoughtful and kind observations of the story are tremendously appreciated.

Thank you very much, and I wish you all the best.
