Into the Unknown: Love Never Hurt So Much

This is a novella of six stories by the following authors: J.A. Belfield, Aimee Laine, and Jocelyn Adams. These are to support the debut novel for each of the authors. These novellas definitely peaked my interest. I have questions that I need answered. As I finished each story I kept saying "oh come on, I want to know what happens next". If you are looking for some new authors to read, I would add this book and these authors to your TBR list. Then you will need to add their debuts as well so that the questions we have can be answered. This is what makes a good book, we want more. I give "Into the Unknown..." 4 1/2 stars.

"Marked" by J.A. Belfield

This is written in the first person.
The story starts out with a man/werewolf keeping secrets from his mate. Sean wants to do right by his mate. Jem takes it personal and his explanations don't seem to help. Just like all couples, you keep a secret and it puts a strain on the relationship. Sean's trying to find something special for Jem but Ethan's not helping. He wants something unique for a pledge of commitment. I'm left wanting to know what the future has in store for Sean and Jem.

"Misguided" by Aimee Laine

Wyatt Moreland walks into his office and sees Stuart Vance sitting at his desk. Stuart is bored and tells Wyatt that he envies him for his office. Wyatt's significant other is named Charley. They've been together for sixteen years. They have a person of interest that keeps crossing their paths. He's a shifter (mimic). Charley used to be part of Wyatt's group and wants back in. Aimee adds a twist to the connection between Wyatt and Charley. Does Charley go back to work for Wyatt? Do they make it as a couple?

"Tempted" by Jocelyn Adams

This story is written in the first person.
This is a story of the seelie and unseelie. Lila is having a tryst with Liam. You will see that Liam's feelings are very strong where Lila is concerned. We find out that Lila is the queen of the seelie and Liam is the king of the unseelie. When Lila and Liam connect the heat is almost instantaneous. Around the story of Lila and Liam there is also a mystery going on. The mystery involves the selkie and the unseelie. Our couple is very upset with what is happening to the selkie. We're left wondering if Liam is successful in solving the mystery. Do Lila and Liam find a way to be together?

"Darkness & Light" by J.A. Belfield

This story written in the first person.
Jem hits the snooze button on her alarm and goes back to her dream. She gets up the second time so that she can enjoy breakfast in bed with her husband, Peter. She keeps hearing the name Sean in her head - what a puzzle. She goes to see her BFF, Poppy. They're off to do one of their favorite pastimes - shopping. Peter is always telling Jem how to dress. If you have likes and dislikes in husband material, you'll definitely hate Peter. We're left asking: Who's Sean? What happens to Peter? Does Jem finally get all that she deserves? What happens next in the story?

"Little White Lies" by Aimee Laine

Charley Randall's seen speeding around the mountain terrain because she's trying to meted a deadline. We see that she gets into a situation and wants to shift. She then meets two guys during her speeding trip - Wyatt and Stuart. Charley wants to show Wyatt how much she likes him but James tries to stop her. If you had a chance to morph yourself, what would be your ideal? We are left asking: Where do they go from here? What does Aimee have in store for them next?

"The Glass Man" by Jocelyn Adams

This story is written in the first person.
We see Laura is trying to help a boy names Garret. While helping him she meets Liam Conner. We also see that she needs to stay one step ahead of someone that is following her. Liam, offhandedly, invites her for a meal. We can see that Laura feels responsible for the boy. Jocelyn leaves us wanting to know what happens with Garret. What happens with Laura and Liam?

A Kiss for Luck by Kele Moon

Dr. Clara Evans is trying to get through a divorce and her best friend, Jackson Philips, is allowing her to stay with him for a while.  Clara is an emergency room doctor and Jackson is a paramedic.  They have known each other since high school.  Her soon to be ex, Frank, is a real jerk and Clara deserves better.
Clara is trying to survive New Year’s Eve quietly when Jackson walks through the door.  She takes matters into her own hands and gives him a midnight kiss.  He reciprocates by giving pleasure she has never felt before – she’s never felt better.

Even as Jackson and Clara make love, he pays her compliments.  How many of you would appreciate that?  Jackson also takes care of her.  He is definitely a “friend with benefits”.  I wouldn’t mind him as my friend!  They’re very comfortable about their sexuality and themselves.  They know what they want and are willing to give what the other needs.

If this story was a paper edition, the pages would be scorched.  If you’re looking for a quick read, this is definitely one I would recommend reading.  Kele grabs the reading right from the beginning.  This is one of those short stories that you don’t mind reading over and over again.  I would also check out any other books that Kele has written.  This story would definitely make a great Lifetime movie – although the censors would have to get involved and that wouldn’t be a good thing.  One can always hope though.

I give “A Kiss of Luck” 4 ½ stars (or flames).

Pulled Long by Christine d-Abo

Ian Long owns a coffee shop with his two sisters.  Jeff Carson is a straight guy that’s getting a divorce and has a crush on Ian.  Christine has given her reader’s another interesting read.

Right in the first chapter, Ian goes for it.  You have to cheer Ian on – he really deserves some happiness.  Jeff is very blunt about what he’s looking for from Ian.  Ian got burned once so now he has self-esteem issues.  On their first date, they go to Maverick’s (a sex club for adults).

Christine has them doing “truth or dare” on their first date in one of the rooms at Maverick’s.  It was a very interesting scene.  What a way to get to know each other.  Her sex scenes never disappoint her readers – can we say hot!

I love how Christine doesn’t make relationships easy for her characters – just like in real life.  Nothing is straightforward between Jeff and Ian.  And of course one of them has an ex.  Jeff has the type of personality where he expects answers – he’s exactly what Ian needs.  Christine shows the reader that everyone can feel vulnerable but that most families are there no matter what.  At the very end, she gives the reader a chuckle.

You will be glad that you have read this series.  You don’t have to read any of the books, in this series, in order but at some point you have to read each one.  You won’t regret reading the works of Christine d’Abo. You’re also one step closer to reading Josh’s story.
I give “Pulled Long” 4 1/2 stars.

Seductive Rendezvous by Victoria Blisse

This is the second book in the "Rubenesque Rendezvous" series.  It continues the story of Joe, Leanna, and Lucy that was started in "Naughty Rendezvous".  If you love holiday romances, you will love this one.
In this story, the reader gets to see how much Leanna loves her daughter Lucy.  We also get to see that the heat between Joe and Leanna continues.  They know what they want from each other and aren't shy about getting it.  Our couple's feelings are so real and believable you stop thinking of them as characters in a story.
Leanna has issues that any single mom would have and Joe has the same types of feelings that any man, confronted by a baby, would have.  He's just a man who wants to make sure that Leanna is happy.  And when they are by themselves, that all she feels is pleasure.
As you read this story, it may give you some interesting ideas of how you can celebrate with your own significant other.  That's why the title is so apropos - the story is very seductive.  It's also a story that will seduce you and leave you wanting more.
It can be read separately from the first book but I suggest reading the whole series.  This is a series you will want to read again - it's a must have for your collection.  The sex is not forced on any scene and shouldn't make you feel uncomfortable (spanking).  The scenes are beautifully written and the heat level goes up - you just can't put it down.  You will definitely want to read the third book when it comes out.
I give "Seductive Rendezvous" 4 1/2 stars.

The Legend of Michael by Lisa Renee Jones

This is the first book of the "Zodius" series.
Cassandra Powell comes to work for her father and to evaluate some of the soldiers at the military facility.  Not two minutes after literally bumping into one of the soldiers he's hitting on her.  His name is Michael Taylor.  She then goes to meet her assistant Kelly who tells her something interesting about the GTEC soldiers that she will be working with.  I love how Kelly tells Cassandra how to have protected sex - ok Mom!
Cassandra's father seems to be one of the evil forces in this story.  He's done some experiments on the soldiers that Cassandra must now see what the effects are.  He seems to think that he can play God and not be held accountable.  But there is someone who is much more evil than he is.
Michael goes on a mission with two brothers, Adam and Caleb.  Adam shows us how the experiment can take a turn for the worse.  What's even worse is that there is a woman, his wife, who's as evil as he is.  Lisa paints Adam as a very dark sadistic man.  He gets pleasure from other people's pain.  Lisa doesn't make it too graphic but just enough so the reader will understand the type of evil man he is.
Lisa takes the reader on a very suspenseful ride.  From one chapter to the next we don't know what's going to happen to Cassandra and Michael.  But we have to keep reading so that we can find out.  You have to love a hero that in the midst of a war going on, he has time to make love to his lifebond.
Cassandra's father isn't happy on how his soldiers have turned out, now he wants to create a super soldier.  This is one more reason to keep reading.  Was this latest experiment a success?   And how does Michael's mother fit into all this?  Lisa gives us a glimpse into a world where if you fool with Mother Nature, you will suffer the consequences.
I love how Lisa has given Cassandra a strong personality.  She either fights by Michael's side or she'll just go out on her own.  They also love each other - no matter what.  This is the type of love we all long for.
The story ends with us wondering whether good was able to defeat evil.  Who will prevail?  You will have to keep reading the series to find out the answer to this question.  I definitely recommend reading this series.
I give this book 4 stars.

A Shot in the Dark by Christine d'Abo

This is the second book in the "Long Shots" series.
Main Characters:  Paige Long is part owner of a coffee shop along with two of her siblings.  Carter is a firefighter who frequents her shop.  Right away he likes what he sees and invites her to Mavericks, a local sex club.
Paige walks into the coffee shop's kitchen to find two of her employees having sex.  Now what would you do in her shoes?  She ends up working the rest of the night shift and this guy starts to hit on her - his name is Carter.  In talking with Carter, it finally dawns on her that he is a Dom.
Her brother Ian comes to see her the next day after hearing what happened the night before.  She's concerned about him.  Is this what leads to Christine's third book?  Can't wait for number 3 to come out so that I can find out the answer.
On her way back to the coffee shop, guess who she meets again.  This time in a uniform.  Don't you just love men in uniform?  He's also back to hitting on Paige.
One thing I love about Christine's writing is that she sticks to her scenes.  There is no going off on tangents that don't have anything to do with the interaction of our main characters.  Or that don't add anything to a scene.
Things start to happen quickly for Carter and Paige - another good thing about short stories.  They both know that they can give each other what they want.  This is what makes Carter a good Dom.  You will find that the BDSM is very subtle in this story.
If you are more of a sensualist, this story will be good for you.  None of the sex scenes are over the top and unbelievable.  If you have an adventurous sex partner this story may give you some ideas.  And isn't that what some of our romance/erotic novels do?  Give us ideas that spice up our lives a little.
The story ends with us wanting more.  I can't wait to see how Christine is going to end this trilogy.  Will Ian finally be happy and find love?  This is definitely a series that you will want to read again.
I do have questions for Christine though, is Josh going to have his own story?  He seems to be a link between our main characters.  I would love to see him connect with someone.  Is Maverick's going to show up in other books?
I give book 2 of the "Long Shots" series 4 1/2 stars

Desert Warrior by Nalini Singh

This is the second story that is in the double book ("Lord of the Abyss") by Nalini Singh.  You will not be disappointed if you buy this double book.  It is a reprint of her August 2003 Silhouette Desire book.
Jasmine Coleridge seems to have a self-esteem problem.  She also wants to design clothing.  Tariq al-Huzzein Donovan Zamanat is the Sheik of Zulheil and knows what he wants.  They also knew each other 4 years ago.
There is an intensity between Jasmine and Tariq right from the start.  Mina is the lamb to Tariq's lion.  Tariq treats Mina as a possession and Mina just wants to be loved.  The story appears to be contemporary but because of where the story takes place it would also fit in as a historical romance.  The desert doesn't seem to change very much.  Almost like time stands still - the desert is almost untouched by the outside world.
Tariq's claiming of Mina is very sensual.  You see Mina blossom under Tariq's touch.  The reader also gets a chance to see how romantic sleeping under the stars can be.  It may give you some ideas about getting romantic with your significant other.
The past keeps getting in between Tariq and Mina's relationship.  You will have to keep reading to see if the couple can "weather the storm".  There is a saying "Love conquers all".  Will their love be able to?
The hunks in some of the romance novels always have a way of saying the wrong thing and his lady-love ends up slipping back into her shell.  As I was reading, I had hoped that Tariq wouldn't follow suit - but he did.  Now I have to hope that Mina puts him in his place.
Nalini likes to tease her readers.  Will Mina's love be enough?  Will Tariq realize what he has before it's too late?  Nalini also adds in the evil sister.  You will have to read the story to find out what she does and if she destroys the love that the couple has for each other.
If you are a hopeless romantic, you will love this book.  I'm used to reading Nalini's paranormal romances but this was a very nice change.  The only disappointment I had was that the second story doesn't have its own cover.  With Nalini's description of what Tariq looks like, you would love to see an actual picture.  But you will not be disappointed if you go and buy the double book (unless you already own the original from 2003).
I give "Desert Warrior" 4 1/2 stars.

Naughty Rendezvous by Victoria Blisse

This story is written in the first person.  I'm not usually a fan of this style but for this story it works.  The author writes as if Leanna is talking directly to you.
Leanna has a 6 month old daughter Lucy.  Joe is someone who she's met online.  You can tell right away the effect Joe has on Leanna.   Her mother is her only support system since a husband isn't in the picture.
Leanna goes to meet Joe alone and they go back to her place where the heat gets turned up a notch.  I love how they find any excuse to "touch" while watch a football (British) game.  We also find out that Joe is considered a Dom.  Leanna lets Joe control the sex they are about to have.  If you own a dining area, you may change your mind about how you use it.
They then continue into the bedroom.  Joe lets Leanna know that he finds her beautiful.  I was sorry to see this story end.  They compliment each other very well.
It was the perfect short story but I'm an incorrigible romantic.  I wanted to see how Joe interacts with Lucy and if they continue to see each other.  I also want to see if they get their "happily ever after".
If you like erotic romances, you will definitely want to read this one.  If you don't like reading BDSM, this may change your mind.  It's done very well and not "in your face" and it doesn't dominate (sorry about the pun) the story.  I can't wait to read more of Victoria Blisse's work.
I give this story 4 1/2 stars (or in this case flames).

Lord of the Abyss by Nalini Singh

This is book 4 in the "Royal House of Shadows Series".
This book is the tale of the youngest of the Elden royals, Micah.  In this story he is known as the Lord of the Black Castle.  He wears a suit of armor that seems to take over his body.  Our heroine's name is Liliana but we find out that her father is the Blood Sorcerer.
At the beginning of this story, the Blood Sorcerer's evil has found its way into Micah's soul.  It's Liliana's goal to get Micah to remember who he is and where he belongs.  But when she sees Micah he believes her to be a threat and throws her into a cell.  While awaiting to see what her fate will be, she starts to reminisce about what life was like living with the Blood Sorcerer.  As you read this story, you will also see how much this father loves his daughter.  Or does he?
As Liliana and Micah interact with one another she tries to find different ways that he can remember what his purpose is supposed to be.  She tries food and telling him "night-tales".  On one morning Liliana is trying to feed him breakfast but it looks like Micah has other ideas.  We think he wants to steal a kiss but just as she gets close - he makes a remark that will have you laughing.
You will love their interactions after that - it turns quite sensual which shocks Liliana a little.  As you read on, you will see that she has a poor body image of herself.  But we have to remember that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".  Nalini did a great job with writing their interactions.  I loved them so much that I didn't want to put the book down.
Nalini has made Micah's story dark but it is brightened by the romance that blossoms between Micah and Lily.  She does a great job of building the anticipation.  You just have to keep turning the pages to see what is going to happen next.
There is a part in the story where Micah is trying to protect Lily and this is where he remembers everything.  It also affects how he feels about her - you have to feel sorry for Lily's sense of loss.  But the make up scene is very erotic.
As you get to the end of this love story, you will see that Lily and Micah are each other's hero.  I found that this was a great way to end the "Royal House of Shadows" series.  I'm sorry to see the series end but it gave me a chance to read some author's work that I may not have read otherwise.
When I was sent this book to review, I found that they actually sent me the "2 for 1" copy.  You can either purchase the single title on November 15 or wait for the double book on November 22.  I wanted to get this review out to you so that you can decide which book you wish to purchase.  By the end of October, I will do a separate review for the other book.
I give "Lord of the Abyss" 4 1/2 stars.

Blood Howl by Robin Saxon & Alex Kidwell

Main Characters:  Jed Walker is a man who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it.  He appears to be ex-military - special ops.  But we also see that his morals seem to be questionable.  Some of what he does might be considered illegal.  He also owns a cat named Knieval.  Redford is a man who appears to be very quiet, introverted and quite shy.  He's not quite what he seems to be - a werewolf.  For a werewolf, he almost appears to be afraid of his own shadow - not really what you would expect.
Jed has a new client named Fil (Filtiarn - which means "Lord of the wolves").  Fil sends him to a house where he meets Redford.  Jed doesn't feel right about what he was sent to do and takes Redford to a bar.  There he explains what he does for a living.
We learn that Jed's sexual preference is domination.  Is this something that will work between Redford and Jed?  Especially since Jed is the one that likes to be dominated.  At the beginning there's a lot of sexual talk and innuendos.  The book's not about the sex but a romance between a human and a werewolf with suspense thrown into the mix.  But it is also very light on the "paranormal".
In the first quarter of the book, the only indication that we have that Redford is a werewolf is his word and the mention of a cage.  We also see that there are people after Red for that reason.  Jed has decided that he needs to protect him.
In one scene, Jed and Red start to make out but then are interrupted by sirens.  The interruptions seem to be a common them for at least half the book.  Is this a good thing?  Is this what keeps the reader turning the pages?  Or is it to see what type of werewolf Red is?
Things start to escalate between the two of them at which point Red reveals he's a virgin.  Our authors do a great job at describing the interactions between Jed and Redford.  They're two people learning about each other - this includes falling in love.  Jed takes Red to the zoo and this is when we finally start to see their relationship blossom.
As a reader, you may get frustrated that our couple keeps getting interrupted.  But isn't this what builds the suspense?  Once they get back to Jed's apartment, this is when things explode between the two of them.  You will see that this scene is very descriptive.
In true romance novel fashion, one of them says those three magical words and the other says "no" and leaves.  Redford goes home and finds trouble waiting for him.  But our hero is there to save the day.  Then our authors give us the predictable make up scene.  But is happily ever after meant to be theirs?  You will have to read the book till the end to find that out.
If you are judging the book by it's title and thinking it will be a paranormal romance you may be a little disappointed.  I would have loved to see more of Redford as his werewolf self - it would have added a little bit more to the story.  If you judge it as a work of adult fiction you may find it ok.  It is a gay novel but as I was reading the book, I completely forgot that it was a book about two men.
I wouldn't say that it's the best romance book I ever read and I wouldn't say it's the worst.  Having read it once, I wouldn't put it in my pile to read again.  I would give "Blood Howl" 3 1/2 stars.

Double Shot by Christine D'Abo

This is book 1 of Christine's "Long Shot Series".
Main characters:  Sadie Long owns a coffee shop and she lusts over Paul Williams.  Paul, who happens to be a good friend of Sadie's, works at a sex club called Mavericks.  Josh Scott is Paul's boss.
As Christine's story opens, we see that Sadie is a shy young woman.  She goes into Mavericks looking for Paul but ends up having an interesting fantasy.  You can also tell that Sadie has the hots for Paul.  Paul wants to offer Sadie a catering job.  This is also when Sadie first meets Josh.
I loved the interaction between Sadie and her brother Ian.  I can just picture how Ian is reacting to Sadie's artistic talent.  I love how Christine also makes reference to one of my favorite cooking shows.  It helps to give her story more reality (something the reader can relate to).  She also does a great job of showing the heat building between Sadie and Paul.
The night of the catering event, Paul finally lets Sadie know some of the fantasies he's been having about her.  Christine also gives us a hint of what Sadie wants.  Christine also does a great job of teasing the reader by not having the sex so "in your face".  We get to use our imaginations this way.
The story is subtle and sexy at the same time.  Plus, it's nice to see a young woman character still have a shy side and a business woman at the same time.  The sex scenes flow very well through the story.  You don't feel that Christine decided this was where I needed to add some sex in.  You can feel how all the characters connect together.  And, how bad can it be being "serviced" by two hot men (every woman's fantasy).
If you have a significant other, this book will help put some spice in your love life.  It may also be a book that you would like to read over and over.  This book is h-o-t.  You will need to keep a fan handy.  This is also a short story so if you don't have a lot of time to read and want your "love" fix, this would be a perfect book for you.
I definitely cannot wait for book 2 to come out.
I give this book 4 1/2 stars.

Lord of the Wolfyn by Jessica Andersen

This is book 3 of the "Royal House of Shadows Series".
Our main characters are Prince Dayn who is the second son of the king of Elden.  Alfreda Weston is a police officer who lives in Salem.
Right at the beginning, Jessica introduces the reader to the Wolfyn.  They are ravenous shape shifters who are deadly beasts.  Because of their habits, they need to be killed.
In this book, Dayn's father can mind speak to him and tells him what must happen to the Blood Sorcerer (the evil element from books 1 & 2).  We also see that Dayn is considered a hunter.
Reda lives in a town that is known as a magical town.  But Jessica makes Reda a non-believer.  We first see Reda reading a book and for some reason she feels a connection to a guy who has green eyes.  While reading, Reda says a "spell" that she learned as a child.  After saying this "spell", Reda meets Dayn.
Jessica has Reda seeing things that no human should be able to see.  It's made so realistic that you feel it's something that could possible happen to anyone.  Then the action starts to happen.
You can almost hear Dayn's snide attitude after his first confrontation with Reda.  Reda doesn't believe what's going on - she hasn't hear a word that Dayn said.  Even with all that, she still agrees to help Dayn.  Would we behave the same way?
Jessica then gives us their first kiss.  But just as it starts getting good, Jessica gives Dayn a conscience.  But she also has a way of having her main characters compliment each other.  She gives them a past full of hurt.  But there is also something else there that seems to draw them together.
There is a part in the story that Jessica has put an obstacle in their way.  When Reda first views it, you can just about hear her comment.  Dayn, being an alpha male, has an interesting way of getting her to cross that obstacle.
None of the sex scenes were forced.  They just flow within the story.  They are made to feel natural.  Reda and Dayn loved with no expectations from the other.  But the heat that is generated between the two continues throughout the story.
In Jessica's book, she adds another evil element and her name is Moragh.  Moragh is there to stop Dayn from fulfilling his objective.  This prepares us for the fourth book - "Lord of the Abyss".
You will definitely want to finish out the series.  I give "Lord of the Wolfyn" 4 1/2 stars.

Falke's Captive by Madison Layle & Anna Leigh Keaton

This is book two in the "Puma Nights" series.
Main Characters:  Beth Coldwell is a graduate student looking for some big cats.  Kelan and Reidar Falke are brothers with a family secret.
We also have minor characters:  The rest of the Falke's family - younger brothers; Sindre and Torsten, younger sister; Heidi (ironically she is a veterinarian), and older brothers; Axel and Gunnar along with their woman Dakota (their story is in book one titled "Falke's Peak").  Tim another grad student working along side of Beth and Professor Whitmore who oversees the research project.
Our story opens with the brothers at their favorite place in Leavenworth - the Tap 'n Tine.  Then they see Beth walk in.  The purpose for Beth being in town is because of a research project.  We see that it's lust at first sight for the brothers.  And it seems that the feeling is mutual.  Our authors give us the typical bar scene - Kelan starts hitting on Beth.  Then she gets an eyeful of Reidar.
We see that while Beth is out in the woods she shoots a big "cat" with a tranquilizer dart.  But not everything is as it seems.  She has also tagged and implanted a microchip into the cat.  Later we see her trying to track the puma which leads her to the Falke family store.
Our authors give the reader a BDSM scene between Beth and the brothers.  It's not something that is over-the-top but fits in very well into the story line.  Reidar can feel their connection right away but Kelan fights it.  Their connection grows as the story continues.  I love how our authors add in funny moments when the brothers and Beth interact with one another.
Then we finally get to meet the professor in charge of Beth's research project.  His actions are questionable.  This adds a little suspense to the story.
Madison and Anna have the brothers acting like spies when they go after something that Beth has and they want.  It's funny to see how the brother's minds work - one thinking of their future with Beth while the other is trying to make it go away.
This story reminds me of the romantic suspense movies I sometimes watch.  It was also interesting to see my feelings about the interactions between humans and wild animals written into the story.  This gives the reader another connection to the story.
At one point Beth feels betrayed and you have to sympathize with her.  But her anger is short-lived (some of which could be because this story is short).  You have to wonder that if the story had been longer if things might have been a little different.
Spoiler alert:  Our authors made Beth out to be honorable.  But if you are willing to alter test results how honorable can you be.  In Beth's defense I will say that it was done out of love - but still, honor is honor.
Getting toward the end of the story, Madison and Anna give us an action scene fit for a movie - the good guys are here to save the day
You will find that you don't want to put this story down.  If you love shape shifter romances, you will want to read this book.  If you haven't read the first book, and you liked this one, I would suggest putting it on your must read list.
You don't need to in order to understand this book but if you want to know more about the older brother's story, you will want to check out "Falke's Peak".  I'm looking forward to seeing if they continue the series.  I want to know what happens with the younger brothers and their sister Heidi.
Overall, I give this book 4 stars.

Enchanted Destiny by Rayka Mennen

Main Characters:  Jake Taggert, contractor and single father.  Katherine Richetti, business woman with magical abilities.  Setting:  Halloween time.  This is perfect since Kat is a witch.
Kat and Jake meet as destiny comes calling.  Kat, of course, doesn't want it - bad timing.  She goes to talk to her Nonna and comes back to find someone on her porch.  Rayka gives Kat a conscience and she tells Jake what is going on.  But Rayka makes him a typical male, he doesn't believe her.  It's funny to watch Jake's confusion as to what he is going to do about Kat.
Jake is also intrigued by her.  I love how Rayka makes Jake a man who is also shy.  He also finds Kat a little quirky.  But, just like most men, he can't accept what cannot be explained logically.  Our author is good.  She puts a little "wrench" in the picture, an ex-wife (and as you read you will get to see why).
Then we get to see their first kiss.  For those that love romance, the kiss starts off sweet and then explodes from there.  But then of course they come to their senses.
Rayka also gives the reader a nice family moment when Kat meets Jake's son for the first time.  Rayka also includes another tender moment between our love birds.  It starts out very innocently and then heats up pretty quickly.  Then we see one of those perfect timing moments and it's one that you can just picture happening.
The first sex scene fits in perfectly - our author doesn't force it to happen.  What I love about this story is that even though it is short, the sex scenes don't take over.  And Jake, being our typical male, has to screw things up.  Rayka did not create anything that didn't seem believable.  Just like in real life, the parents get involved and try to fix things.
Rayka has two minor characters - Gina and Eric.  Their story will be out in December.  You will not want to miss this sequel.
I give "Enchanted Destiny" 4 stars (only because I wanted to read more).  It will be interesting to see if Jake and Kat make a reappearance in "Enchanted Desire".

"IOU Sex"

This book is by Calista Fox and published by Carina Press.  It is an e-book that came out on August 1, 2011.

Main Characters:  Fiona Carlisle, jilted by her fiance for her sister.  Michael Houston, playboy photographer and Fiona's rebound fling.
This is a book that is written in the first person.  The reader can get a sense of what it's like to be in Fiona's shoes.  Fiona begins her story by thinking about her sister's engagement party.  In order for her to make it through the party, where her ex-fiance (of course) will also be attending, she has decided to ask Michael to go with her.
Michael is definitely the ultimate bad boy.  Michael has been very persistent about sleeping with Fiona after that brief fling.  Just like all good romance novels, the female character doesn't want a repeat because she is afraid how it will affect her.
You have to love the descriptions that Calista uses.  The reader can just imagine how vindictive Fiona's little sister is.  You also have to sympathize with Fiona.  No one deserves to be treated the way she was.  But Calista also makes Fiona a strong independent woman.
When Fiona goes to see Michael to ask him a favor, you can just about see the electricity that is created between the two of them.  If I was reading a paperback, instead of an e-reader, I'd have to use the fire extinguisher to put the flames out.  Calista creates some really "hot" scenes.
Like every good erotic romance, you go over to ask a guy a favor and instead things get out of control and you have some very heavy petting.  But the girl comes to her senses at the last-minute and puts a stop to it.  No one wants to get burned twice.  Then the reader finds out how the book got its title.
One thing I like about Michael is he never quits when he wants something.  And what he wants is Fiona.  With Calista's way with words, the reader can tell how much Michael cherishes Fiona.  This is the type of erotic romance that I love to read - so hot you can't put it down.  The sex scenes are pure steam and no place is off-limits when making love.  Calista makes her sex scenes a natural progression of their love for each other.
Michael is Fiona's strongest supporter.  Fiona fights their connection but I don't think she realizes what a strong couple they really are.  Michael certainly knows how to take care of a woman.
Calista also does a great job with Fiona.  When it comes time for the engagement party, the reader has to cheer Fiona on.  We see how both vulnerable and strong she is.  Calista writes the type of book that you want to read again and again.
One thing I loved about this book is that there aren't a lot of pages.  This forces the author to keep the scenes short and to the point.  We don't feel that the scenes drag on forever before getting to the point.  If that did happen, the book wouldn't flow as well as it did.  Plus, I don't know that I would have liked it as well.
I give this book 4 1/2 stars.

"Lord of Rage"

This book is by Jill Monroe and was published by Harlequin.  It came out on September 20, 2011.

This is book two of the "Royal House of Shadows" series.
Main Characters:  Princess Breena of Elden.  She is a woman who can mind speak and dream talk.  Osborn is a warrior of Ursa.
We first meet Breena when in her dreams she meets a warrior.  But every time she starts to dream of her warrior, and things start to get intimate, Breena wakes up.  She also never sees his face.  She's only ever seen his eyes.  Then a family crisis occurs.
We first meet Osborn as he faces a challenge that will turn him from a child into a man.  This is how the men of Ursa become a warrior.  And this is where Osborn will get his power from.  His first task, as a warrior, is to face the vampires that are out to kill his family and fellow villagers.  But just like Breena, he faces a family tragedy.
Breena, even though not a warrior, has a fight of her own.  She tries to use her magic but it fails her.  Then from somewhere she gets a feeling of strength.  As the story progresses we see what happens with her magic.
Our hero has a past that he isn't proud of.  But isn't that one thing that we love about our romance heroes?  Osborn also wages a war with himself about his wanting Breena.
Right from the beginning of the story, Jill starts building the suspense.  That and seeing what's going to happen next is what keeps the reader turning the pages.  Jill sends Osborn in as a knight in shining armour (or in the case of this story - bear fur).  And Breena is our damsel in distress.  This gives our story a fairy tale feeling.
Jill also gives our main characters an instant connection.  Our hero also gets one of those stupid male moments.  He made Breena leave and then immediately regrets it.  Then, of course, he has to go and get her.  But Jill also makes him an honorable man.  He takes care of his two younger brothers.
As the story weaves through we concentrate on our two lovers.  Then a misunderstanding temporarily separates them.  But as in all good romances, lust wins out in the end.  And we all know how good romances end.
This is a book that you hate to put down.  Jill does a great job of building the anticipation as the story progresses - you can do nothing less than turn the page to see what happens next.  If you enjoyed reading book one of the "Royal House of Shadows" series, you will enjoy this one as well.
You could read it by itself, but some things might not make sense if you don't read the series in order.  You will also find that the "resident evil" from book one shows up in book two.  I can't wait to see what book three has in store.
I give this book 4 1/2 stars.

"Lord of the Vampires"

This book is by Gena Showalter.  It is published by Harlequin and came out on August 23, 2011.

Gena Showalter brings her readers a book that starts a new series titled "Royal House of Shadows".  Hers is the first book of this series.
Our heroine's name is Jane Parker.  The story starts with Jane receiving a mysterious package.  We see that she is unemployed, has no family, and has been injured.  She has also been having some very strange dreams.  She dreams of a vampire - Nicolai.  We find out that the mysterious package has a book in it and that the story matches her dreams.
As Gena tells you the story, the reader can feel the sensuality weave itself around Jane and Nicolai.  The story weaves itself so well you just have to find out what happens next.  It's a story you don't want to put down.
Jane's life changes when she goes to sleep in one world and wakes up in another.  As Jane tries to figure out why she is where she is, she finds out that Nicolai is there too.
When we first meet Nicolai he seems to have amnesia.  The only thing he is sure of is that he's a vampire.  When the two finally meet, Nicolai wants Jane very badly.  As you read on in the story you can feel the connection between the two characters.  We see how stubborn Jane can be and how this frustrates Nicolai.  Jane also tends to think too much.
Gena makes Jane a character that is both strong and intelligent - a woman who can take care of herself.  It's great to see a woman character that can stand up to the "big guys" and almost hold her own.  You can also tell that this surprises Nicolai.  Nicolai acts just like a knight in shining armour - someone who will protect his lady-love at all costs.
One of the evil characters in the book is named Princess Laila and she is Jane's sister.  The other evil character is Jane's mother the Queen of Hearts.  We have to keep reading to see if good (Jane and Nicolai) can overcome evil (Laila and the Queen of Hearts).
As you continue reading this story you can feel the connection between Jane and Nicolai grow.  Gena creates great chemistry between the two.  It got so "hot" that I had to turn my fan on.  This story sizzles!
Every time you think that Jane and Nicolai are going to romantically connect, Laila and her mother seem to interrupt.  You would think this would slow the story down but it doesn't.  It actually turns up the heat more.  I was drinking my ice tea at the time I was reading this story and was I glad.  This book turns the temperature up a notch!
In all good romances, our lovers are torn apart and then have to find their way back to each other.  Gena doesn't disappoint her readers in developing this story.  She also knows how to make her evil characters really "bad".  You really have to hate that they keep coming between Jane and Nicolai.
Gena also does a great job of putting a plot twist in.  You would think that it would ruin the story because it comes so close to the end of the story but Gena works it to perfection.  It keeps the reader's attention because you want to know how it all ends.
This is the type of paranormal romance that I love to read.  It reels you in with the promise of something but that something just stays out of reach.  This forces the reader to turn the page.  You have to continue the story to see what happens.  Gena keeps the readers involved throughout the whole story by allowing them to use their imagination.
With this great book to start the "Royal House of Shadows" series, I can't wait to see what the other authors do with their books.
I give this book 4 1/2 stars.

"A Touch of Crimson"

This book is by Sylvia Day.  It is published by Signet and will be out on October 4, 2011.

If you are a fan of Sylvia Day's work, like I am, you will love this new book.  It's a book you'll hate to put down!
Adrian Mitchell is a character you have to feel sorry for right from the beginning.  He has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. Within the first five pages the action begins and continues all the way until the last page.  The action, and Sylvia's writing style, keeps the reader's attention throughout the whole story.
In chapter 2, we meet Lindsay, Adrian's love interest.  Every woman loves a good love story but theirs takes a while to develop.  This is what keeps the readers turning the pages to see if they finally get together.  Sylvia does a great job of using her words so that the reader can picture exactly what is going on in the story.
Now Adrian isn't your normal hero—he's an angel.  And Lindsay is human, isn't she?  You'll have to read each page to find out!
There are lycans who work for the angels.  Elijah is one of them.  Is he for or against the angels?  Do the main characters ever connect?
I'm a reader that can usually tell by the end of the first chapter if the story line is going to hold my attention so that I will want to finish the book.  With this book, I couldn't wait to read the next chapter to see what was going to happen.
I will definitely read the next book in the Renegade Angels series when it comes out.  If you've never read Sylvia Day before, this will make you want to read more of her books, promise!
This is definitely 4.5 stars

A Midwinter Fantasy

"A Midwinter Fantasy" is a Dorchester Publishing Christmas Anthology to be published on October 15.  You get three books for the price of one.

The first story is "A Christmas Carroll" by Leanna Renee Hieber.
The prologue, for me, starts the story in some confusion.  We know the story is a historical romance because it is set at the end of 1888 and it is Christmas time.  My confusion comes in how the words in the prologue are trying to set the story.  My mind just can't seem to process the words into a picture in my mind.  This is part of Leanna's "Strangely Beautiful Series."  If you have read her other books in the series this may seem less confusing.  And would probably help you to better understand what is going on.
We meet Michael Carroll in Chapter 1.  We find his profession is that of a vicar.  He is part of a group called "The Guard".  It is not a military group but a group that watches over evil spirits (ghost hunters of old).  We then find out that he has loved the same woman for over twenty years.
Everyone that belongs to "The Guard" all have special gifts.  But as Michael shares his story, we find that the groups gifts have disappeared.  How will they function?  Their gifts are what also keep the group connected to each other.
I like that in Leanna's story our couple is older - not all couples need to be young.  The reader can easily put themselves into the couple's shoes.  How is Michael going to convince his lady-love, Rebecca, that they belong together?
Rebecca doesn't feel that she deserves Michael's love.  But it is Christmas time - a time for miracles.  And of course the story is set during the era of Dickens (big hint).
Michael scores hero points in my book because he visits the local orphanage infirmary.  He is considered "The Heart" of the group and we can see why.  He is also someone who does not hide his emotions.  You don't see many authors that give the male character these types of feelings.  It's refreshing!
I'm also impressed with the descriptions of the settings and clothes that the characters are wearing.  Leanna gives her readers a good idea of how it was to live in 1888.  She also shows the reader that you don't have to have a lot of sex in a story to see the romance between characters.
I give story one 4 stars.
The second story is "The Worth of a Sylph" by L.J. McDonald
This story is part of L.J.'s "Sylph Series".
The story starts out with us learning that Mace is a shape-shifter (a battle sylph).  We also learn he has a female master.  Her name is Lily and she is in her eighties.  Lily decides that it is time for Mace to find a new master.  Before she leaves their plane, she wants to make sure that Mace is taken care of.
In the story, we get a lot of information about Mace and a young boy named Jayden.  We also see that Sylphs need to draw energy - whether from humans or animals.  Mace sets out to try to find Jayden and as he travels we find out what Mace's life is really like.
I felt the story was running a little slow because of all the time it takes for Mace to look for Jayden.  We see all that Mace has had to endure but his love interest doesn't appear until chapter 5.  This is when we find out her name is Sally.
In an anthology stories tend to be short and the author has little time to tell their story.  In this case, and because I have not read the other books in the series, I felt that L.J. fell a little short.  The first four chapters went on a little too much about Mace and no hint of Sally.  Once you get to chapter 5, you see that the story picks up.
I did enjoy the way that L.J. describes things  and she gave us the perfect sort of hero.  Mace protects women and children and will do anything for them.  If I go back and read her other books in the "Sylth Series", this story may have been better for me.
I give this second book 3 1/2 stars.
The third story is "The Crystal Crib" by Helen Scott Taylor
Sonja is a travel professional that goes to meet Vidar.  Vidar owns a resort/theme park.
Sonja is a woman who hopes that her dreams will come true.  One of those dreams is to meet her father.  Vidar is a man who takes charge.  We can tell that Helen has given Vidar a strong, and very focused, personality.
Is Vidar the one who will make all Sonja's dreams come true?  We find that Vidar knows Sonja's father and is going to take her to meet him.  On the way to this meeting, Sonja sees things that just don't seem possible.  She also finds out that her father isn't exactly human.  And what other dreams does Sonja have?
What I love about Helen's story is that she mixes both paranormal and mythology together.  She does a great job at describing her characters.  The reader can just picture the look on Sonja's face as she looks around and sees what you or I will never see.
This is a love story with a twist.  As you read the first love scene, Helen has you both smiling and laughing.  The descriptions she uses makes the scene seem very clear in your mind.  Helen gives her readers a father/daughter moment as well as a good over evil moment.
I give story three 4 1/2 stars.
In my opinion, Dorchester Publishing saved the best for last.  Even though I have never read these authors before, I would, overall, recommend reading this book.
